Battle for the Truth in Every Generation

Raising Children or Chickens?

In Africa we have a saying: “We don’t raise children, we train children. We raise chickens.” There’s a big difference.
A ministry leader from another organization came to my office in Gulu one day, and as we talked I asked him, “So you’re feeding children and paying for their education? That’s great. What are you doing about the issues of the heart?”

He had no answers. The organization simply fed and educated the children, while the heart issues of character and transformation were left unaddressed. We are called, as the body of Christ, to make disciples…

No Longer Orphans

Our children all came to us as orphans discovered during the war by relatives on the graves or near the bodies of murdered parents. Each child was brought in desperation by an extended relative, like the auntie who was so weak with HIV that she could not continue giving care. In spite of all this, our children have never considered themselves orphans! They met their Heavenly Father and know Him personally along with their family in Favor, and they are being “trained up” in the way they should go.

Our focus is excellence in academics. Many of our children have earned honors from other schools and even government recognition, although some did not start school until they were 10 years old or more, due to the war!

They are healthy and strong, as we care for their physical needs.
They are leaders in their communities and schools, often known as the “prayer leader” or the “pastor of their class.” They are open with their faith, strong with their witness, and excellent in their character and leadership.

What about the Heart?

Our aim is not to “raise children.” We do that well with chickens. We are set on “training them up in righteousness,” seeing their identity based in truth and Godly foundations among those in their generation.

What about character building? Restoring the missing foundations of integrity, morality, honesty, diligence, respect, honor, the fear of God, and so much more? Are those truths being laid in the hearts of the children and youth in Africa? What about heart transformation in order to see these youth become leaders that change their nation?

This is what you and I are called to do together. To “care for the orphans,” (James 1:27) but not leave them unchanged! We are after seeing a generation of righteous leaders trained up to lead their  schools, communities, villages, and later their nation. A generation founded upon the Truth of God’s Word that will bring lasting transformation.
Will you be a part of bringing sustainable change through training these children with us,”’one life at a time, one day at a time?” Will you join us in this battle for truth?

“You shall raise up the foundations of many generations…” (Isaiah 58:12)
“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is older he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)
