Pastors’ Church Planting Conference in Juba

What an exciting time in Juba! We are living in Hab. 1:5, “…I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you.”

God is after His harvest. He is after His bride in the darkest corners of the earth, and He is after your heart and mine, to love what He loves. As we press on together to know Him, the fellowship of His suffering, and the power of His resurrection, we run this race side by side with only one goal in sight: – winning the “prize of the high calling of God, in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 3) I love what the Message Bible says here: “So let’s keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us. If any of you have something else in mind, something less that total commitment, God will clear your blurred vision – you’ll see it yet! Now that we’re on the right track, let’s stay on it.” Amen!

I came to Juba a few weeks ago to prepare the ground for a US team coming to lead an incredible Pastors’ Church Planting Conference May 20-22. In addition, we were coordinating a Mobile Medical Clinic in one of the most remote areas north of Juba, a place without clinics and churches. The preparation details were numerous, but things fell into place smoothly with much help and much prayer.

Three hundred and fifty hungry pastors and church leaders attended this powerful training conference. There was a tremendous move of God amongst the leaders as He swept over their hearts through Worship and the Word and stirred vision, passion, direction, and encouragement. Yes, He HAS come to bind up the brokenhearted and to declare the “acceptable year of our Lord.” The healing of the land, which we pray so earnestly for (2 Chron. 7:14) is the healed heart and the revealed vision of the personal destinies to which God has called the people of this land. As that heart and vision are restored, unwrapped, revived, and strengthened in pastor after pastor, you can truly testify, “God IS healing this land!” But this is only the beginning.

Restoration must lead to transformation. That is the need of South Sudan. These pastors were equipped with awesome teaching, books, relationships, Bibles and audio Bibles to take home and use in church planting among the illiterate, and so much more. Can you imagine what would happen, if all 350 pastors plant a new church in their home village within the next six months and begin to multiply? There will be no stopping the armies of the living God in this nation!

The Medical Team

Mobile Medical Clinic

Each day that the Church Planting Conference took place in Juba, a medical team of Americans and South Sudanese were deep in the rural villages treating hundreds of hurting and needy people, sharing the love of Jesus and the message of salvation, and praying with them to receive Him as Savior. They worked tirelessly for three long days in three different villages, sometimes driving as many as four hours total to reach these remote locations. The people in these places are not just “hungry,” they are “starving” for life, for truth, and for the reality of a God who loves them. Some shed tears to see a medical team of this expertise reach all the way into the bush where they lived with help, hope, and prayer. These rural areas will be the sites of the first church plants following the conference.

As the conference came to an end, I met with five handpicked pastors whom we had known and invited to come together, from Juba (Central Equatoria), Torit (Eastern Equatoria), and Aweil (Northern-Barh-El-Gazal). With them we formed a team and shared the vision for discipleship and church planting that would cover all of South Sudan. They were passionate, like-minded, and strengthened in what they were already carrying within their hearts.

Many of you have read this vision, which we have called the 2020 Vision. We are believing the Lord of the Harvest, along with this newest and needy nation, for twenty millions souls to be born into the Kingdom of God, and one thousand churches planted in order to disciple them and maintain the harvest, by the year 2020.

Can you believe for that with us? How wonderful it would be for all of us to hear the Father say one day, “Look at the incredible harvest fields you were a part of reaping! Well done, my good and faithful child.”

These first five pastors will spearhead the mobilization for fifty more future pastors. These fifty will be handpicked men, five from each of the ten states of Sudan, who will complete three months of training at our Bible School campus in Gulu beginning September 1st of this year. These men will be equipped with the Word, resources, and knowledge to fulfill the call of God on their lives. They will be sent back to their rural homes, all across South Sudan to immediately begin planting churches. They will also begin teaching a two-year Bible training course that we will be sending back with them: one to each state.

As these churches grow and reproduce naturally just as the New Testament Church did – from house to house, village to village, covering the most rural areas of South Sudan – the darkness WILL be pushed back! It has to be! The light of God’s Word dispels darkness, truth dispels deception, good overcomes evil, and one by one the kingdoms of this world will continue to become the Kingdoms of our Lord and our God!

Thank you for being here with us. Thank you for standing strong in vision, purpose, destiny, and in the power of His might! Keep your passion burning, your focus clear, and your vision always bigger than yourself. It MUST Be God and God alone who fulfills His purposes through each one of you, as He has destined to do through this beautiful and recovering nation.

I love you all tremendously,

Carole Ward
